Artwork BEING PULLED 6 STRINGS in the ‘Being pulled and folded’ series

Being pulled 6 strings header

After a two-year gap in creating with the ‘Being pulled and folded‘ approach, I began experimenting with it again. A feeling of being in a fun loop through that re-connection.

The ‘being pulled’ refers to stitching different tones adjacent for a series of lines. Then, there are other parts with a line gap. Together, they create a pattern within a pattern. In this work, they create an upward arrow to the middle.

The ‘folded’ refers to when the adjacent tones cross over each other and create a different pattern. In this work, the top left corner is stitched like this, in yellow. The darkest shade is on the outside on the left and on the inside at the top.

Creation Process

This work reconnected me to this creative approach. I wanted to use up a pile of leftover thread from other works.

No sketching or further design was undertaken. It includes backstitch and cross stitch, using stranded cotton and some satin embroidery floss.

After getting going I thought I hadn’t cut enough cloth because I was enjoying it so much.

Stitching started with the green and apricot red tones that worked from the bottom to the middle. The blue moving upward was next. Together these created the sense of an upward arrow.

The loop perspective was finished with the yellow and magenta on the left, and grey shades on the right.

Exhibition History

It was part of my solo exhibition, Life Activity, at Community Bank Darling Square Sydney in 2024. Life Activity featured 19 original works and 12 limited-edition prints.

It was sold at my solo exhibition and is part of a private collection in Sydney.

Artist artwork statement

Collection of 6 threads for a colour run.

For all the going back and forth in this, there is also a feeling of going around a corner. This feeling is positive. Those positive vibes aren’t always obvious to us, so we need to seek them out and celebrate them.

Life is positive. It keeps moving as we go ahead and our minds circle back on the good times.
