Artwork PULLED, FOLDED AND STACKED in the ‘Being pulled and folded’ series

This is the first major work after a break from stitching. I wanted to combine some different ideas that I’d developed while stitching works in the ‘Being pulled and folded’ series. It holds a special place in my heart as Awarded Royal Easter Show 2023 Third Cat 44 Exhibitor’s own design.

Creation Process

The concept was to stitch a really creative work to enter in the 2023 Royal Easter Show. I wanted to explore ideas I’d stitched in other work with a bigger work. No sketching or further design was undertaken. All work in cross stitch using stranded cotton and some satin embroidery floss.

Stitching started from bottom left with the purple section. then I worked on a counter on the left.

Next was the middle section and then the top section.

This work is large and colourful, but it has fewer colours than some of my other larger works. The colour runs were repeated throughout the work.

Exhibition History

It was first exhibited in the craft section of the 2023 Royal Easter Show. It was in my solo exhibition, Life Activity, at Community Bank Darling Square Sydney in 2024. Life Activity featured 19 original works and 12 limited-edition prints.

This work is part of my collection and can be viewed when I open my studio.

Artist artwork statement

At times, we feel like our insides are turning. We can compress in and look inward, but we need to keep moving upward to emerge from those feelings.

The magenta symbolizes change and moving to aqua clarity with inner healing. Gaining power and energy via orange; and fire for life with the upper movement of red.

Life is resilient. We need strength and determination to navigate the constant pull between different parts of life.
